IIHF targets 3x3 in 2030

The final decision on whether 3x3 hockey will debut as an Olympic sport at the 2030 Winter Games is drawing near.

The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) has been actively pioneering the 3x3 format since the 2017/18 season. They have tested various tournament structures and rules at the Youth Olympic Games, including events in Lausanne 2020 and Gangneung 2024. More recently, the IIHF has organized trial competitions with experienced players in different nations, with another tournament anticipated in Brazil this November.

As the International Olympic Committee (IOC) invites proposals for new disciplines for the 2030 Winter Games in France, the IIHF is in the process of finalizing its submission before the January 2025 deadline. A decision from the IOC is expected around March.

IIHF President Luc Tardif informed the Semi-Annual Congress that the inclusion of a 3x3 hockey tournament would significantly increase Olympic participation, adding 16 more teams (eight men's and eight women's) and bringing an additional 240 athletes to the Winter Games. Inspired by the success of similar compact sports like 3x3 basketball and rugby sevens at the recent Paris Games, there's a strong conviction that 3x3 hockey holds significant potential for attracting new fans and boosting global participation in the sport. Furthermore, it would double the number of medals awarded in ice hockey, which is already the largest sport at the Winter Olympics in terms of athlete involvement and competition duration.

"Hockey has a clear opportunity here. Now is our moment," stated Tardif

He further emphasized to the delegates, "The positive impact that 3x3 basketball, rugby sevens, or beach volleyball had on their parent sports was beyond expectations. It created a substantial boost in player recruitment and financial prospects.
