Hype Hockey Meets IIHF Leadership: Driving the Future of 3x3 Hockey in Europe

The high-level meeting served as a powerful platform for exchanging ideas and aligning visions regarding the rapid expansion of the 3x3 hockey discipline across the European continent.

RIGA, LATVIA – The dynamic and fast-paced world of 3x3 hockey is gaining significant international momentum. Cementing its position as a key regional contributor, the Latvian-based organizing team, Hype Hockey, recently held a crucial summit with top international representatives: Florian Mayer (IIHF Sport Manager 3x3) and Christian Müller (UltimateHockey).

IIHF Commends Hype Hockey’s Regional Impact

A central focus of the discussion was the future development roadmap for 3x3 hockey, a format that the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) is actively championing for its high-octane action and lower barrier to entry for developing nations.
Florian Mayer and Christian Müller shared valuable insights into the IIHF’s strategic objectives, including the ongoing refinement of official tournament rules and the possibility of integrating 3x3 into major international events, such as the Olympic Winter Games (a proposal for 2030 is currently in motion).
Crucially, the IIHF representatives highly praised Hype Hockey’s substantial contribution to cultivating this discipline in the region. Hype Hockey shared its hard-won expertise and experience gained from successfully hosting competitive summer tournaments for the past four years. This track record demonstrates not only organizational skill but also a dedicated effort toward forming a robust community and fostering a dedicated following for the 3x3 format among professional and aspiring players alike.
The IIHF's acknowledgement underscores the value of grassroots organizations in turning strategic concepts into tangible, successful sporting events.

A Shared Vision for Dynamic, Skill-Focused Hockey

Hype Hockey expressed immense interest in the strategies being pursued by the IIHF, particularly their move toward formalizing rules and establishing a clear pathway for the discipline's growth. The meeting confirmed a strong alignment in vision:

"The 3x3 format is exhilarating. It strips the game down to its core, demanding exceptional individual skill, quick decision-making, and relentless endurance from every player on the ice," noted a representative from Hype Hockey. "We are committed to continuing our efforts to form and nurture this vibrant new community. We see 3x3 as a crucial outlet that allows players to demonstrate their individual mastery in a spectacle that is thrilling for spectators."

The discipline’s emphasis on continuous action and open ice makes it highly appealing, showcasing hockey as a dynamic, modern, and spectator-friendly sport.

The Next Stage in Riga

The conversation concluded with anticipation for Hype Hockey’s upcoming event.

Building on the success of their previous tournaments, Hype Hockey has scheduled its next competition, bringing the action indoors for the winter season. The tournament is set to take place in Riga at the end of December. This event promises to be a high-stakes showcase of the region's best 3x3 talent, further solidifying Riga’s position on the European 3x3 hockey map.

Hype Hockey looks forward to collaborating closely with the IIHF as the organization continues its pioneering work, ensuring that the development of 3x3 hockey in Europe is both strategic and community-driven.
